Experiencing 2025 Toronto’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade as an UW International Graduate Student

By Yuqi Zhao

March 16, 2024, was a day filled with energy, tradition, and a sea of green as Toronto hosted its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. As an international graduate student in the Master of Accounting program at the University of Waterloo, attending the parade was more than just a fun outing—it was an opportunity to immerse myself in Canadian culture and understand the importance of embracing new experiences with an open mind.

Growing up in a different part of the world, I had only a vague understanding of St. Patrick’s Day, a celebration rooted in Irish heritage. However, standing among thousands of people in downtown Toronto, I quickly realized how much this event meant to the community. The streets were lined with families, students, and kids, all proudly wearing green, waving Irish flags, and cheering for marching bands and cultural groups. The parade wasn’t just about Irish culture—it was a celebration of diversity, inclusion, and the way different cultures shape Canada’s identity.

As a University of Waterloo student, I’ve learned that being open-minded is essential, not just in academics, but in life. I realized that success requires understanding different perspectives, adapting to change, and embracing diversity. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade reminded me that these qualities extend beyond the classroom. Engaging with new traditions and connecting with people from different backgrounds makes us more adaptable and globally aware—qualities that are just as valuable in professional settings.

This experience reinforced an important lesson to me: learning doesn’t just happen in lecture halls—it happens in the moments we step outside our comfort zones. Whether it's attending cultural events, networking with others, or exploring Canadian traditions, staying open-minded enriches both our academic and personal journeys!
