Equity

At the Graduate Student Association, equity means actively working to create an inclusive, just, and empowering environment where all graduate students, regardless of race, gender, sexuality, disability, socioeconomic background, or citizenship status can thrive. We acknowledge the systemic barriers faced by underrepresented and marginalized communities and are committed to addressing them through both advocacy and meaningful action.

GSA Monthly Book Club

Join us on the last Friday of every month for the GSA Book Club—a welcoming space for graduate students to connect, reflect, and engage in meaningful conversations around equity-focused themes.

Each month, participants collectively select a book to explore. Past reads have included Pedagogy of the Oppressed, The Wretched of the Earth, When We Cease to Understand the World, and Halfbreed. When possible, we provide a PDF of the selected book—however, reading in advance is not required.

Enjoy tea and snacks while engaging in thoughtful discussions about how we can bring Indigeneity, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Anti-Racism (I-EDIAA) into our everyday lives and academic spaces.

GSA × Campus Wellness: Lunch Out Loud

In collaboration with Campus Wellness, we host Lunch Out Loud once a month—a relaxed and inclusive space for 2SLGBTQIA+ graduate students to connect and build community.

Come as you are and enjoy:

  • Free pizza and snacks

  • Board games and casual activities

  • A welcoming, low-pressure environment to meet others

Registration is available through Portal via Campus Wellness. Everyone is welcome—we’d love to see you there.

GSA × International Experience Centre (IEC)

The GSA partners with the International Experience Centre (IEC) to host monthly International Student Mixers and special events for the international graduate student community.

These events are designed to create a friendly and informal space to meet new people, build connections, and feel at home in Waterloo.

At our mixers, you can:

  • Meet fellow international graduate students

  • Enjoy free pizza and snacks

  • Play board games and socialize

  • Spend time in the SLC Graduate Lounge
